Good week for English Football!

…well, in the Champion’s League anyway given that Tottenham got shown the door in the UEFA Cup competition.  Tuesday’s matches this week were for Chelski and Man Utd against Valencia and Roma respectively.  Wednesday’s match was Liverpool, who were sitting pretty, and PSV Eindhoven at Anfield.

Starting with Chelsea then… having only managed to scrape a draw (1:1) at home Chelsea had it all to do to qualify for the semi-final… the game looked like it was headed into extra time when Essien scored a last minute winner to put Chelsea through, watching it you really had to feel for Valencia as this was a cruel cruel way to exit the cup.

Manchester Utd were at home and had a 2:1 defecit to overcome but they did have the proverbial ‘all-important away goal’… but the way the game panned out they didn’t really need it!  They were 4:0 to the good at half time and the game finished an astonishing 7:1!!  Man United played fantastically well and look like a side in a rich vein of form at the moment.

Liverpool on Wednesday were playing at home and were 3:0 up on aggregate before the kick-off - a nice position to be in.  The game, in all fairness, was really rather dull and Liverpool nearly conceeded on a couple of occasions and I can’t help but think the match would have got a bit more tasty had PSV have scored.   After about an hour of play Peter Crouch found the back of the net and the tie was effectively won.

I think, irrespective of how the teams fare from here, that it is a massive achievement for English football for their to be three English clubs in the last four in the toughest club competition in the world!

The semi-finals are as follows:

  • 24th April: Manchester United v AC Milan
  • 25th April: Chelsea v Liverpool
  • 1st May: Liverpool v Chelsea
  • 2nd May: AC Milan v Manchester United

If I were a gambling man I think it will be a Chelsea - Man United final… but I would dearly love to see a Liverpool - AC Milan replay of the 2005 final!! ;-)
